ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and snoring can be classified as Sleep Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD). More and more we are learning the harmful effects of undetected and untreated sleep apnea which are not just limited to daytime sleepiness and fatigue.
Unfortunately sleep apnea can have much more harmful effects including High Blood Pressure, Heart Problems and Type II Diabetes - such that organisations such as the American Heart Association have recommended that all patients with Atrial Fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythym which increases the risk for strokes) be screened for OSA- and treated if it is detected.
Current research indicates that OSA affects at least 43% of men and 28% of women aged aged 50-70 globally. These statistics increase when African-American populations were investigated - with the prevalenace in that demographic recorded as high as 54% in males and 42% in females- with many of these cases undiagnosed, than thus ufortunately also untreated.
As the effects of sleep apnea are now much more understood, dental health professionals, who look into their patients' mouths every day owe it to their patients to be able to screen them and to be the best collaborators with their doctors, to improve their overall health!
Might there be a collaborative role for members of the dental team to assist in improving our NCD stats in the Caribbean region- through their detection and help in treatment of OSA? We won't know if we don't try.
Held in the beautiful island of Barbados, the Caribbean Dental Sleep Medicine Conference is dedicated to providing robust training to dentists and dental hygienists from the Caribbean region in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine.
This conference, created with the Caribbean dental team in mind, is still world-class quality and aims to educate and inform attendees about the latest developments, best practices, and essential disciplines in Dental Sleep Medicine - at a fraction of the cost that would be charged in other more lucrative jurisdictions.
Join us to gain access to this amazing training and network with professionals in the field.
